The Speech Delivered by Ambassador Sarnıç, Consul General of Turkey in Jerusalem, in Gaza
Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a real pleasure to be here with you
all during this special event today. Please allow me first thank to Dr. Gerald
Rockenschaub World Health Organization Head of Office and Mr, Mahmoud Daher,
WHO Head of Gaza sub-office for organizing this event and for their close
cooperation with my office.
Today we are here to mark the ongoing
implementation of a USD 1.5 million assistance package from the Government of
Turkey for emergency needs in the Palestinian health sector in Gaza in
cooperation with WHO.
I am proud to inform you that Turkey’s
assistance to Palestine reached 370 million US dollars between the years
2004-2014. Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency-TIKA, the Prime Ministry
Disaster and Emergency Management Administration (AFAD) and Turkish Red
Crescent have been actively participating in Turkey’s humanitarian assistance
efforts in Palestine especially by their rapid and effective response to urgent
needs for medicine, medical equipment, health treatment, food and fuel.
In 2014, a human tragedy unfolded in Gaza
before the eyes of the international community.
This crisis caused massive death toll and the worst ever destruction in
Gaza. Yet another time the international community has to pick up the pieces.
Turkey, aware of its humanitarian duties
and responsibilities, has once again mobilized all its relevant organizations
and institutions in a most rapid and effective manner in order to deliver
humanitarian aid to our Palestinian brothers in Gaza who are in dire need.
Within this context, Turkey’s humanitarian
and development-oriented assistance to Gaza also continues uninterrupted.
During the "Conference on Palestine, Reconstructing Gaza" held in
Cairo on 12 October 2014 Turkey pledged to provide 200 million US dollars of
assistance to cover the years 2015-2017 to relieve the immense destruction
caused by the last Israeli attacks on Gaza. In this context, the total amount
of the assistance realized and planned for Gaza by Turkey in 2015 has reached
75.6 million US dollars.
I cannot pass without
mentioning two major projects carried out by Government at the present in Gaza.
We completed the Turkey-Palestine Friendship Hospital which has 150 beds capacity. Currently tender process of the medical
equipment and furniture for the hospital continues. We want to put this
hospital to the service of Gazans as soon as possible.
started the construction of 320 housing units for the Palestinians whose houses
were completely destroyed during Israel’s military offensive against the Gaza
Strip in 2014.
Before I conclude, I would like to highlight
one important issue. Turkey will resolutely maintain its efforts to provide
humanitarian and development-oriented assistance to Palestine. We also
appreciate the efforts of the responsible members of the international
community in this regard.
However, I must say that all these efforts,
would be temporary and short term unless the unlawful Israeli blockade and
restriction imposed on Gaza Strip and whole Palestine is lifted and a just
solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is established.
I would like to thank you all again for
being with us today.
